Room 204

Eric Smith, 5th Grade, Pennington, NJ

Meg knew it was a bad idea moving into this apartment, it gave her the creeps. Meg and her mother pulled up the long driveway. When they pulled up, Meg got out and she saw a mysterious old lady look out the window. Meg's mother said to Meg impatiently, "Come over here and help me carry this stuff into the apartment."

After they were done, Meg went upstairs to room 204 and Meg's dog, Henry, ran into the room. Meg cautiously went in to try to find her dog. She saw that the room was empty. Nothing was in the apartment, no carpet, no couch, or wallpaper.

After looking in the apartment for Henry, she saw her dog run into the closet and she whispered, "Come here Henry, don't go in there." So she went in the closet to get him. When she turned around to go to her apartment, the room had carpet, a couch and wallpaper. She saw the old lady that she saw looking out the window, come out with two cups of tea and she said, "It's about time you came. I've been waiting for you. Come sit down and have some tea." So Meg and the old lady sat down. Meg asked the old lady curiously, "What is your name?" And the old lady replied nicely," My name is Margery. I used to live with my son and his daughter but you know how people hate old people in their house, well they kicked me out and I came here. But don't worry, that was well over 90 years ago." Than Meg asked, "How old are you?" Then Margery laughed and said, "I'm not going to tell you that, but I will tell you that I'm more then 90 and less then 105." And they talked on and on and on.

Mostly Meg went over to Margery's house to carry in her groceries and she gave her flowers. Margery really liked Meg. She brought Meg a surprise gift and Meg was really anxious to see what it was.

One day when Meg was carrying in the groceries for Margery, she saw a girl and Meg said," Hi." And the girl just stood there and looked at here. So Meg just walked away. Then Meg ran all the way to Margery's room because she was so anxious to see what the surprise was, even though she wasn't getting it far three more days.

When she got back to the room, Margery said, "Thank you." And then she said in a questions way, "Can you promise to come here tomorrow?" Then Meg answered, "Yes, I always come here almost everyday, don't I?" Then she went back to her room.

The next day, Meg was going on a walk and she saw the same girl that she had saw the day before. Then the girl said, "Do you want to come to an Axial Rose concert?" Then Meg thought about Margery and how Meg had promised to go visit her. Then she said, "Oh all right, who cares about an old lady. Lets go." And as they pulled out, Margery was watching out of the window.

At the concert, Meg couldn't concentrate on the concert because she was thinking about why Margery didn't want to be alone. She thought that something was weird. Margery said that she was over 90 and less than 105. And she also said that she got kicked out over 90 years ago when she was an old lady.

When Meg got home, it was thundering and lightening outside and it was about to pour down rain. Meg heard Margery crying so Meg felt sorry so she went over to visit. When she opened the door there was nothing there. When she was going back, the door slammed behind her then when she turned around Margery had her hands up like she was going to kill Meg. Then Meg pulled the door with all her might and finally the door opened and Meg ran into her apartment and when she got in, her mom said, "I have been looking all over for you. Listen, I'm going out. As soon as I leave, lock the door."

When Meg's mom left, Meg locked the door and started to read her favorite book.

A little while later she heard a knock at the door. When she looked through the eye hole, she saw Margery . She said, "Oh Margery, I am so happy to see you." But when she opened the door, she was not there. So Meg went over into Margery's apartment. When Meg got there, there was nothing there except an old shadowy figure and when Meg got closer, she saw Margery and Margery turned around and she said in a deep mean voice," I did not want to be alone today because today is the day that I died!" And Meg quickly ran out of the apartment and locked the door and she was so frightened that she huddled tight right next to the sliding door that looks onto the deck. She peeked out onto the deck, she saw Margery then Meg screamed and ran into her bedroom.

She peeked out onto the wet deck, she saw Margery. She screamed and ran into her bedroom.

The next day she felt sorry for Margery so she went into room 204 and she saw Margery. As Margery ran over with her hands up like she was going to kill Meg and Meg bent down put her hands over her head and screamed, "I'm sorry. I just wanted to make a new friend." And after that, Margery put her hands down to her sides and asked calmly, "And did you make a new friend?" Then Meg said still trembling, "Yes." And Margery said, "Well as long as you made a new friend. But I'm still alone. All I have is this room."

Margery moved in with Meg and her mother. Meg learned to never break her promise again. But she never found out what her present was.
